Pheidole obscurithorax - South American Big-Headed Ant
Florida, USA

photograph © Alex Wild 2008

Pheidole obscurithorax is a South American native that was introduced accidentally to the United States through Mobile, Alabama, the same port that also welcomed the fire ant Solenopsis invicta. This species is unlikely to be as damaging a pest as the fire ant, but the spread of P. obscurithorax should probably be monitored.
