Formica neogagates group

F. neogagates group ants are small, shiny Formica that can be locally abundant. Some species are hosts for social parasites in the Formica sanguinea group. 

In the photos below, notice the color variation in F. neogagates between the westerm (red) and eastern (black) populations. Color is not always a reliable taxonomic indicator in ants.
