Sunday Night Movie: Fire Ant Physics

The New York Times explains why engineers are interested in masses of fire ants:

The Times doesn’t mention why ants would form such an unusual structure, but there is an ecological reason for the behavior.

Solenopsis invicta is native to the floodplains of the Paraguay river basin. The species deals with periodic flooding by evacuating their colonies into living ant rafts, so these ant masses are an unusual adaptation to floating on water.
