Monday Night Mystery

Tonight’s mystery bug has a tail,
Though her stinger is fated to fail.
A wasp she is not;
In our counterplot,
Her young feed on wood by the trail.

For 10 points, to what insect does this limerick refer?

Points will be awarded to the first person to register a correct guess in the comments. The cumulative points winner for the month of October will win their choice of 1) any 8×10-sized print from my insect photography galleries, or 2) a guest post here on Myrmecos.

Good luck!

  1. My best guess: Golden-tailed Sugar Ant – Camponotus aeneopilosus, and it’s a wood feeder!
    My other guess: Golden-tailed Spiny Ant – Polyrhachis (Hagiomyrma) sp. maybe Polyrhachis ammon, but I think that one isn’t really a wood feeder, unlikely to be right.
