The Monday Mystery returns with an especially odd insect antenna:
To what sort of insect does this bizarre instrument belong?
To earn points, be the first to correctly guess:
- Order (2 pt)
- Family (3 pts)
- Subfamily (5 pts)
The cumulative points winner for the month of January will take home their choice of 1) any 8×10-sized print from my photo galleries, or 2) a guest post here on Myrmecos.
Good luck!
oooo probably totes wrong but, Coleoptera: Carabidae: Paussinae?
european honeybee pollen brush
Order: Hymenoptera
Family: Apidae
Subfamily: Apinae
I think Kojun has the taxon. You don’t mention points for naming the structure, but these would be some of the medial antennomeres. I’ve seen photographs of species of Cerapterus – associated with Myrmicaria spp. in Malaysia – with similar looking antennae.
DAMMIT KOJUN
Totally a paussine! If taken in Australia, probably Arthropterus.
(Sure am glad I read these previous posts before I embarrassed myself by guessing Lepidoptera, and some sort of moth!!!)
or bees!
Arthropterus sp?

The antenna!
Oops first reply went anonymous.
It is the antenna of the paussid beetle.
