A Prairie Sunset

One of my favorite insect artists is Rick Lieder, whose skill at composition with natural light is unparalleled. Yesterday afternoon I visited Meadowbrook park at sunset to have a go at practicing my own natural light photography. I’ve got a long way to go to match Rick’s talent with the medium, but I was pleased with this shot:

Diabrotica beetle at sunset

Contrary to my usual style, I subjected the image to some heavy photoshopping. Here’s the original, unaltered exposure:

  1. Thanks for the shout-out, Alex. Very nicely done. I like how much texture you were able to bring out in the post-processing.

Also a nice example of how toning the color down a little can make the image more dramatic.

I’m really surprised that the images we posted today are so similar!
