The image quality of a low-end webcam is poor. To salvage anything usable the composition must be absolutely compelling.  Fortunately, Logitech’s C250 can focus exceptionally close to the lens, allowing a dramatic shot of insect and entomologist.

  1. I’ve never used a webcam, but are their shortcomings mainly from their cheap optics, or from cheap sensor chips? If it is mostly the optics, would it be worthwhile to pop off the lens and glue on, say, a low-power microscope objective instead?

    Because our lab has a drawer full of microscope objectives that don’t fit any of our current microscopes, that’s why.
