Monday Night Mystery

Is this an ancient rune? A small town in the Balkans?

To claim points for tonight’s challenge, tell me the meaning of the mystery string of letters. I want an organism (3 points), a function (3 points), and an explanation of why someone like me might care (4 points).

The cumulative points winner for the month of March will win their choice of 1) any 8×10-sized print from my photo galleries, or 2) a guest post here on Myrmecos.

Good luck!

  1. Well I think its the protein sequence for Glutamine synthetase, which serves several functions in the brain, including recycling of neurotransmitters. This means that an intrepid and ever-learning post-doc doesn’t get writer’s block or stumped by ants found in your backyard!

  2. Sorry for spoiling the run of anyone who is playing for the monthly prize but…

It’s a protein! Each letter is an amino acid, and I gather from BLASTing it against nucleotide sequences this a glutamate synthase from a bacterial endosymbiont, possibly Blochmannia which has been shown to aid Carpenter Ants in various ways.
