Answer to the Monday Night Mystery

What was that wrinkled brown mass? A wider view reveals the answer:

It was a nest of Nasutitermes termites, photographed in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Ten points go to MarekB for guessing both the structure and the genus. I’ll also award one point to “Anonymous” who surmised the species to be N. corniger. I’m not 100% positive on the specific ID, but N. corniger is the likely culprit given the bulbous form of the nest.

  1. The squarish “supertexture” of the surface is interesting. I’ve looked a t a lot of these nests over the years, and never noticed it. (Probably too busy poking at them to bring the residents out for a look.)
