Was a theme week worth the effort?

As you may know, last week was Army Ant Week here at Myrmecos. It was our first theme series in the blog’s 3 year history.

What was the result of Army Ant Week on blog traffic? Check it out:

Of course, I invested at least 4 times as many hours as usual composing posts and responding to comments. That’s a lot. I’d love to do another theme week, but it’ll have to wait.

  1. It also helps that army ants are pretty awesome, even for non-myrmecologists. As a non-biologist I was definitely looking forward to it, and I jumped from my RSS reader to the blog more often than I usually do.

  2. It will be interesting to see whether it gets sustained traffic for months or years to come. It’s possible that over the next month or so, this week of posts will become one of the first couple of Google hits on “Army Ants”

  3. A Tim suggests, the long-term benefit will be a better measure than the short-term increase in traffic at this already popular blog. One thing you might do (in all your spare time :~) ) is consolidate the posts (perhaps incorporating anything from comments that seems like an essential addition) into a little web essay with its own url, or as one giant blog entry – for more convenient reading.

It is understandable that you won’t be able to do this sort of mad blogging very often, but we absolutely appreciate the time you put into it and the informative, beautifully illustrated result!

  4. Relative Newecomer

    Hi Alex,

I just started reading your blog daily since 4 months ago and I must have missed a post. Is there one where you explain what you’re doing differently to attract the fourfold increase in visitors? Did they just pop out of the woodwork?! If there’s an older post/comment where you explained that, could you kindly point it out. Thanks.

Hello to fellow arthropod lovers & newcomers. I’m enjoying your sudden inflow.

  5. I thought it was great. I wish I had, been able to participate, but you just had to pick a week I was flat on my back with a bug.
