Tonight’s challenge: four common midwestern insects. Can you identify them from just a small cropped photo?
Points will be awarded to the first commentators to name the correct genus and species for each insect (2.5 points per photo).
The cumulative points winner for the month of October will win their choice of 1) any 8×10-sized print from my galleries, or 2) a guest post here at Myrmecos on a safe-for-work topic of their choosing.
I’ll say number 2 is Danaus.
Oops, I forgot the species. Danau plexippus.
The fourth one is Chauliognathus pennsylvanicus
#1 looks like a Polistes fuscatus
#2 looks like Hylaeus
#4 Chauliognathus pensylvanicus
#3 Genus Phymata perhaps fasciata
They’re all so pretty! My early morning just-woke-up guesses…
1) Polistes fuscatus (tricky because they’re so variable, looks similar to dorsalis too)
2) Danaus plexippus (been raising these)
3) Phymata fasciata (one of my favorites!)
4) Chauliognathus pensylvanicus (yay for soldier beetles)
🙂
Late again! Wierdbuglady gets my answers and points. 🙂
Ditto here, although I’d only be willing to go to genus on 1 & 3.
Very very nice pictures. Go on! ALL pics are in hq!
Seems like a Hemipterus, but I can’t say the species!
